COUPON POLICY - Local Stores

Friday, February 6, 2009

I get a lot of questions about coupons and company policy.  So this week I called around, and talked to the Customer Service in each store asking them what their coupon policy's are.  I must warn you most cashier have no idea what the coupon policy is in their store.  It is so important to be informed, and be an educated coupon shopper.  Some stores are a little more coupon friendly than others.  If you get a crabby cashier that acts like you are robbing the store, for using coupons.  Remember the store DOES get paid back for your coupons from the manufacturer, a coupon is just like paying with cash.  It just comes from the manufacturer, not you.

Hi I'm Sarah's Hubby

So for those who don't know me I'm Sarah's (A Thrifty Mom) husband, Matt.
I'm the technical person behind this blog. And I want to update everyone especially those who are receiving feeds from this site. I have been adding sites and social networks to this blog over the last couple of days, and just this morning I think I have found and resolved an issue with feeds.

You may of noticed duplicate feeds from the post that were made this morning (2/6/09). One that actually looked like a post, and another with a lot of jiberish...well I am sorry for the couple of jiberish post. I think I have this fixed.

Please continue to check in to receive the latest deals from A Thrifty Mom.

Don't forget about the 25 cents sale in Nampa

If you are local (Caldwell/ Boise) Don't forget about the 25 cent sale Friday.  What is the 25 cents sale?  Other Mother is a store that sells gently used clothing for children, and expecting mothers.  They pay you cash or give you in-store credit for the clothing, and toys they keep to sell in their store.  But all the items they don't take due to being, out of season, a little stained or if they just have to many of that size in the store, they ask you if you want to take your items back home.  Or you can donate them to the 25 cents sale.

So the 25 cents sale is  toys, shoes, clothing, bottles, bedding.....you name it.  I have found wonderful things there.  So bring a large sack,( they are having it in the old Honks store next to Other Mothers in Nampa) It starts at 10:00 am  I always get there by 9:45, and wait for the doors to open.  You sort through the clothes full your bag, then sit off to the side.  All the ladies always sort through the clothes to look at sizes, missing buttons, wear.....Each item is 25 cents.  I can't tell you how many cute things I have found there.  It is like the best yard sale on earth!

The Nampa store always holds their sale the FIRST FULL Friday and Saturday of the month.  The Boise store holds theirs the LAST FULL Friday and Saturday of the month.  They put out new stuff each day.

Thrifty Valentine Gift Ideas

Valentines Day "Thrifty craft"
Every year I stress out about any Holiday and the extra money it will cost me.  I always like to give little gifts to my sons teachers, neighbors, family friends etc.  But if you go buy something from the store that is "Holiday theme" you are going to pay an arm and a leg for it.  So  I like to take my thrifty finds, and turn them into thrifty gifts.
A few weeks ago I was able pick up these cans of almonds up for under a $1, normal price was over $4.
  • The unopened can, I  took a piece of scrapbook paper and wrapped it around the can.  Tied a ribbon around it, and added a gift tag.  On the top I cut out a circle from the same scrapbook paper and  glued it to the top of the lid.  The top says My Valentine.  I turned a boring can of nuts into a cute gift in under 10 minutes.  The nuts, the paper and ribbon cost about $1.10.
  • The next can of nuts I opened and ate all the yummy almonds....I was hungry.  But I kept the empty can. Then I wrapped scrapbook paper around it.  You can do 4 cans with one sheet of 12x12 paper.  I then used a Stamping Up punch to cut our the heart, and scallop circle.  I got a cello bag and filled it with Hershey's kisses that I got for $.89  a bag. ( Click here to see post) I also added Granola bars that I wrapped in Scrapbook paper.  Put a bow on it, and in 15 minutes I had a cute gift.  Total cost .40 cents

A few weeks ago I was able to get Granola bars for $1 a box ( read post here)  Each box had 10 bars in it, making them 10 cents a bar. Being that they were so cheap I thought I would let my kids use them to give as Valentines at school.  You can wrap 8 bars with one sheet of 12x12 paper.  I bought this paper in a combo pack, so it was less that 2 cents a sheet.  My kids had a blast wrapping the bars, and are really excited to give them to all their friend.

Walgreens Ad deals week of Feb 1-7

I was able to buy these for $3.56
(Without rebates, and coupons this would have cost $18.89)
I have been trying to get this post done for 3 days now...sorry.  This sale is still good through Saturday, so you have a few days to shop.
To start off with Walgreens  has 5 products on the front of their ad that are totally free after you do your rebate.  If you have coupons to go along with these items, then after you get your rebate you actually earn money just for buying them.  I did not have any coupons to match, but I went ahead and picked up the Garnier Fructis shampoo, and the Thermacare heat wrap.
Both of these items will be totally free after my rebate.

I also picked up 4 bags of Hershey's Kisses
Walgreens has an in-store coupon for Hershey's Valentine candy $1.89 a bag front page of ad. (limit 4 with in-store coupon)
I also had a MFR (manufacturer coupon) for $2 off 2 bags, I got it in one of the coupon inserts from  the last month but I can't find the date...sorry
So by using the  In-store coupon and "stacking" it  with my MFR coupon
I was able to buy these for .89 cents a bag!!!

Coupons 101 - Part 3 When to use them

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Coupons 101- Part 3
When to use your coupons?

  • When to use your coupons- Just because you have a coupon does not mean you should buy an item. In fact if you buy items just because you have a coupon, you will end up spending more money on items you don't really need, and are still over priced. The trick is to wait for the coupon to go on sale or clearance which is an even better deal.
  • Wait for a sale- Wait for items to come on sale then use the coupon along with the sale. Then buy several of that item, so you don't need to buy it again till another sale comes along. Example- I have 10 tubes of name brand toothpaste. People I know tell me "But I don't need 10 tubes of toothpaste!". Well what I tell them is that if I can get paid over $10 to BUY 10 tubes of toothpaste (see my post here) then why not do it. And know that I wont need to spend that $30 dollars over the next year. Each time you can save like this adds up, and by year end you could save a ton of money. Or go on that vacation you wanted.
  • Buy one get one free sales- When a store has a buy one get one free sale, this is a great time to use your coupons. You can use 2 coupons. One for the item you are buying and one for the item you are getting for free. WHY, you need to remember that a coupon is like cash. The store IS getting paid for that product, by the Manufacturer. So the store gives you the second item for free, but they can turn in the coupon and get paid for that item they just gave you for free. Example- chips are on sale buy one get one free. You pay $4.00 for the first bag of chips, and get the 2nd free. But you have 2 coupons for $1 off a bag of chips. You can use both of those coupons. One coupon is applied to each bag of chips (although one bag is considered free) Both coupons are applied to the total sale price. Bringing the total to $2 for 2 bags of chips. You would have paid $8 for 2 bags of chips, but using the Buy one get one (BOGO) free sale you have saved $4 PLUS $2 in coupons.
  • Stacking your coupons- Stacking your coupons is when you are able to use 2 coupons for one item. You are able to do this when you use a in-store coupon ( a coupon that the store prints, normally in the weekly ad. It will have the store logo on it) along with a MFR (manufacturer coupon). When you use the in-store coupon and the MFR coupon together this is called "stacking" your coupons. So watch for those in-store coupons, and see if you have a MFR coupon to go along with it.
  • Rebates- A lot of company's offer a mail in rebate for their items as part of a promotion to get you to try or buy their product. Many times this makes the item free after rebate. Example- The store is selling nuts for $5.00, and they have a mail in rebate for $5.00 which would make the item free. But if you use a $2.00 coupon on the nuts, after you turn in your rebate they will give you a check for $5.00. SO you will actually make $2.00 for buying the nuts.
  • Store match or double- Some stores do this every week, but my local stores only do it a few times a year. They will match you coupon amount, which gives you the chance to get twice the amount of your coupon. Example- the store is selling juice for $1.00 but I have a coupon for $.50 off, The store them matches the price of my coupon giving me another $.50 off, making my juice FREE. Normally if a store matches or doubles coupons they only let you do a limited of items per shopping trip. So I plan to make several trip through the checkout line.

New Printable Coupons are out for February

Sunday, February 1, 2009

The new coupons are out for February. The first of each month coupons.com lists new coupons, which you are able to print from your home. Some coupons are on all month. While others are grabbed within the first week. They have a maximum number that can be printed, and the good ones go fast. Normally the first to go are Pillsbury, General Mills, Yoplait ....
So how do you know which ones to print? Normally I don't print a coupon till I have a sell that goes along with it. BUT when you wait quite often they are gone within hours of the "sale" So go ahead and print the ones you hope to use along with a sale, or would use on a normal priced item anyway.
Now go print your coupons....before all the other crazy coupon ladies get them first.
You can find a direct link by clicking on the blue box , that reads coupons.com. Located below.
